The LIS preschool program provides a welcoming environment for the youngest pupils. Our program assists your child transition from the familiar world of home to a new community of learning, teachers, and friends. This is all achieved within the safe and caring environment of our classrooms and preschool facilities. At this age, children learn by doing, seeing, experiencing, and feeling so our youngest students are exposed to a rich learning environment based on discovery and play. Our preschool curriculum helps children develop a sense of self, discover their role within a classroom community, and recognize and appreciate our differences. As they learn through play, children build their gross and fine motor skills, make sense of their experiences, and learn to express what they learn about the world around them. Children carry a sense of wonder about nearly everything, from language acquisition (English-speaking staff are sensitive to the child’s native tongue), natural discovery of numbers, sharing and caring for others, and frequent visits to natural settings like wooded areas and parks. Our teachers recognize that each child develops in their own way and at their own pace, and understand how to individualize learning to leverage the strengths and experiences of each young learner.
Children remain captivated as they naturally develop a curiosity for letters and numbers, of ‘’natural science’’ of plants and animals, new discovery of their larger community at large, and a more formal approach into learning to read; all surrounded by loving and caring English-speaking faculty who are sensitive to the developmental needs of each child. That is, for those children not quite ready but also for those pupils who are eager to accelerate.
The LIS Kindergarten program incorporates the first introduction to Slovene language and to a choice of another language (German, French, or Spanish) for children who are ready, each meeting 5 hours per week. It is worthy of mention that Ljubljana International School is now officially designated as a candidate school for the Primary Years Program (PYP), an important component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, especially designed for elementary-school programs, including our kindergarten. For more information related to the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and specifically to PYP, please visit the IBO website by clicking here.
Children begin to develop inclinations towards inquiry as they are exposed on this level to a multitude of subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science, cultural studies, physical education, art, music and dance.
Of course, they continue with the acquisition of languages such as mandatory Slovene (classes vary for native and non-native speakers) and a choice of German, French and Spanish, each class meeting 5 hours per week. Great respect is given to help foster a love for learning as teachers introduce curriculum and methods that stimulate the student’s interests. Strategies are used to accelerate or remediate as each child matures. LIS is now proud to be officially designated as a candidate school for the Primary Years Program (PYP), an important component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, specially developed for elementary-school programs. 7th and 8th Grade
Middle School Program
These emerging young people begin asking questions in earnest, in preparation for a life in high school (already, eligible grade 8 students may qualify for high school credit) and college/university where more academically rigorous subjects are introduced.
The same subjects are taught, along with languages, and more emphasis will be placed on becoming more aware of the needs of others through service to others (service projects) and introducing longer term excursions various areas of Slovenia or other countries for more language enhancement. More development of after-school activities with a particular focus on sports, fine arts, and additional language acquisition are offered to the students. LIS is extremely proud to be officially designated as a candidate school for the Middle Years Program (MYP), an important component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, developed specifically for middle school programs. For more information related to the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and specifically to MYP, please visit the IBO website by clicking here.
High School Program
Students should be educated and challenged to explore subjects across the spectrum in preparation for life as global citizens. Accredited by Middle State Association of School and Colleges (MSA) as focussing on an American curriculum, LIS graduates have options to be accepted at universities around the world.
Instead of high-pressure testing, classes are designed for optimum learning in a rich, mastery learning environment. Students are encouraged to seek deeper in every subject matter allowing for significantly greater understanding and retention in each course, from science and mathematics to the humanities. Students are offered Advanced Placement courses (AP) in a variety of subjects as well. Depending on students’ goals, three diplomas are offered at LIS: General (220 Carnegie Units; Academic (240 Carnegie Units); Academic with Honors (240 Carnegie Units, including two or more AP classes). For additional information on the Advanced Placement courses, please visit the CollegeBoard website by clicking here.
