Third-grade students significantly progressed in their reading and writing skills this school year. With consistent practice and many opportunities for reading and writing in various genres, they became better and more independent readers and writers.
Many lessons were dedicated to writing and discussing the text meanings, lessons taught or learned, and essential ideas in texts. Third graders were encouraged to develop their points of view about books they read and to discuss their opinions about a text or characters. They began exploring a great range of books, including a series that allowed them to become more fluent readers and learn to read, define, and pronounce complex words.
Students began using increasingly more sophisticated language in their writing. They spent much time planning, revising, and editing their texts and, as a result, learned the writing process. Improving their work for clarity, coherence, and accuracy helped them understand why editing and revising are essential. They have become more comfortable with technology throughout the year as they employ computers for writing pieces and research reports.
English language learners were also engaged in the classroom through differentiated instruction, flexible grouping, and peer collaborations. Personalized support, visual aids, manipulatives, peer feedback, reading buddies, and assistive technology allowed them to overcome barriers, organize their thoughts, express their understanding in different formats (written, oral or visual), and actively participate in reading and writing activities. Every child progresses at their own pace, and creating opportunities to read and write will further support their growth this summer. While on vacation, you may find a series that interests your child and read it together. When your family experiences an enjoyable or memorable moment, you and your child can write about it in a narrative piece. You can also pick something entertaining and learn how to do it together, like drawing cartoons. Remember to have fun!
