Welcome to Ljubljana International School

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Ljubljana International School. LIS is a distinctive international learning community, diverse in its cultures, languages, experiences, and aspirations. Yet we are united by a shared commitment to the education and development of every child. We believe that education should help young people acquire knowledge and skills, while also developing the confidence, curiosity, character, and the sense of responsibility they will need throughout their lives. At LIS, students are known as individuals. Our comparatively small classes allow teachers to understand their students’ strengths, identify the areas in which they require support, and respond thoughtfully to their academic and personal development. We recognise that students do not all begin from the same place, learn in the same way, or follow identical educational pathways. Our objective is to meet students where they are, while helping each of them progress towards increasingly ambitious goals. During the past two years, LIS has entered an important period of academic growth and institutional development. We have achieved authorisation to offer both the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme, strengthening the continuity of learning across the school and establishing LIS as an IB Continuum School. And we're expanding our Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings. At the same time, we have continued to develop programmes that respond to the particular needs of our international student body. Our Mother Tongue Programme supports students in maintaining and advancing the languages, that connect them to their families, cultures, and identities. Our expanded English programme provides differentiated pathways through English as a Second Language, English B, and English A, enabling students to develop the language skills required for academic achievement. In mathematics, the introduction of a two-level progression allows students to study at a level appropriate to their readiness while preserving clear opportunities for advancement. This structure reflects an important principle of our educational approach: appropriate differentiation should not limit aspiration, but should provide students with a stronger foundation from which to succeed. We are also strengthening the place of the arts within the life of the school. The developing LIS Choral and Instrumental Ensembles are creating new opportunities for students to experience the discipline, cooperation, and satisfaction of making music together. In the coming school year, the introduction of a Classical Art Programme in the upper grades will further extend our commitment to serious artistic study, technical development, and creative expression. These developments are not separate initiatives. Together, they reflect our intention to build a coherent and increasingly rigorous educational programme—one that respects the individuality of each student while establishing clear expectations for effort, growth, scholarship, and conduct. Academic excellence is important, but education cannot be measured by examination results alone. A successful school develops thoughtful, principled, resilient, and compassionate young people. We want our students to ask meaningful questions, engage respectfully with different perspectives, take responsibility for their choices, and recognise that their abilities should ultimately be used in service of something greater than themselves. As Principal, I am honoured to lead LIS into this next stage of its development. I look forward to working in partnership with our students, families, teachers, and wider community as we continue building a school distinguished by academic purpose, personal attention, international-mindedness, and genuine care for every student. I warmly invite you to visit Ljubljana International School, meet our community, and discover what makes LIS a special place in which to learn and grow.

LIS at a glance

  • To start the 2025-26 school year, over 35 different nationalities are represented within the school community, making LIS a truly multicultural and international school.

  • Two fully equipped campuses in Ljubljana to better serve our student community: A) R5 campus PreK – Grade 2 ; B) S20 campus-Grade 3 – Grade 12.

  • The school provides a safe and caring environment for all students in which any form of bullying is strictly prohibited.

  • All core classes are taught in English, and all other languages are offered from exposure level to formal classes (5X per week on average) from Kindergarten to Grade 12 (may be as an elective class).

  • Teachers use a combination of whole class and small group instruction to create a supportive, nurturing, and challenging learning environment.

  • The school offers a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses as part of the Secondary program – also available online.

  • English Language Learner (ELL) support classes are offered to students who require additional assistance with acquiring or solidifying their English language skills.

  • The use of technology is integrated across the curriculum and is a part of the school’s culture. Technology includes interactive boards, laptop computers and a variety of advanced software to enrich the academic curriculum and facilitate interactive learning experiences among students and teachers.

  • The school is proud of its Slovenian roots and as such, it seeks to provide students with an appreciation for the rich culture and history of the Republic of Slovenia.

  • Materials and equipment are up to date and consistently of high quality.

  • A Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy is in place for secondary school-level students who prefer to take advantage of their own technological devices.

  • Individual student attention is provided through small group interaction and class sizes, reflecting a very low student-teacher ratio.

  • An optional after-school activities program complements our offerings with sports/athletics, fine arts, makerspace, music/dance, arts and crafts, and play, to name but a few. Furthermore, the rich extracurricular programming is designed to help each student to develop his or her own special talents and abilities.

  • Blended education is available. This ensures that a student is able to continue his/her education online if the student is unable to attend classes in person.

  • LIS also cooperates with schools in the virtual world as well. This online education allows our school to offer courses normally found at schools of much greater size. Distance learning provides Advanced Placement (AP) students with greater opportunities to enhance their transcripts in preparation for University life.
